A bus carrying 40 high school students and four adults crashed on Interstate 84 in Orange County, New York, on Thursday, killing two adults and injuring many students. The bus fell down a 50-foot ravine, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul, who spoke at an evening news conference.
The New York State Police identified the deceased as Gina Pellettiere, 43, and Beatrice Ferrari, 77. Lt. Colonel Richard L. Mazzone said that some of the injuries were serious, with five people in critical condition. He said the victims were taken to six different hospitals. A Wawayanda Fire Company official told CNN earlier that more than 40 people were hurt in the accident.
Mazzone also said that a front tire failure might have caused the crash, but the investigation is still ongoing.
