Barbara Klein, 79, of Hilo killed by car while on trike bike

A 70-year-old man is in custody for causing a fatal crash that killed a 79-year-old woman on a trike bike in Hilo on Tuesday morning, October 3, 2023.

Police said Carlton Inada of Hilo was driving a 2016 Toyota Tacoma south on Akolea Road around 9:51 a.m. when he hit an orange Recumbent Trike that was also going south in the same lane. Inada did not stop and drove to his home, where he called the police and told them he had hit a cyclist on Akolea Road.

The victim, Barbara Klein of Hilo, was found unconscious at the scene and taken to the Hilo Medical Center by ambulance. She died at 10:56 a.m.

An autopsy will be done to find out how she died.

Police arrested Inada at his home in his vehicle. He faces charges of first-degree negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death or serious injury. Police are still investigating the case.
