A fatal car crash in Norwich claimed the life of a Chenango County woman and injured three others on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The accident occurred at the junction of State Highway 12 and County Road 32, in the town of North Norwich, around 2:11 p.m. Lorena Mayes, 82, was driving a Buick Lucerne with a 91-year-old woman as her passenger. She pulled out from County Highway 32 into the path of a Ford Explorer that was going north on State Highway 12. The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 75-year-old man from Sherburne, N.Y., and his 66-year-old female passenger were both taken to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. Mayes died at the scene, while her passenger was transported by Norwich Ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-critical injuries. New York State Police at Norwich are investigating the crash.
