A tragic accident claimed the life of a Syracuse man on Monday night, October 9, 2023, when he was struck by a police car on Bridge Street in East Syracuse.
Police Lights The victim of the pedestrian crash on Bridge Street was identified as Steven Zalewski, 68, of Syracuse. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., when a DeWitt police officer was responding to a call and encountered a dark object on the road along Bridge Street. The officer could not avoid hitting the object or swerve to another lane due to traffic and a median barrier. He stopped after the collision and found out that he had hit a pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pedestrian was later identified as Steven Zalewski, 68, of Syracuse. According to DeWitt Police, the officer was driving at 37 mph before approaching the intersection of Manlius Center and Bridge Street, and slowed down to 28 mph near the site of the collision. The police said that the GPS data from the officer’s vehicle confirmed his speed.
