A construction worker was critically injured and a gas leak was caused by a truck crash in South Fayette Township on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. at Stonegate Drive and Fieldstone Court, where a housing development project was underway. According to county police, the worker was loading a flatbed trailer when the truck towing it started to roll backwards and hit him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. A WTAE photojournalist reported that police were still at the scene as of 4:45 p.m.
The crash also damaged a gas line that had been covered with a metal plate and a backhoe. Columbia Gas said that the driver worked for a third-party company involved in the project and collided with the backhoe, knocking off the plate and exposing the gas line. A gas crew arrived and shut off the gas safely. The work on the site was supposed to resume on Monday.
